The Power of Your Child’s Imagination by Charlotte Reznick PhD

The Power of Your Child’s Imagination by Charlotte Reznick PhD

(How to Transform Stress and Anxiety into Joy and Success)

We all know children that have things that we consider behavioral issues, some have bedwetting issues, trouble sleeping, headaches and stomachaches, anxiety and fear, trouble dealing with divorce of their parents and/or loss, anger frustration, problems in school, a hard time concentrating, arguments with siblings and schoolmates and much more. Frequently parents turn to medication or discipline – but how often do these things actually work?

I am a big fan of any alternative treatment options – so when Dr Reznick contacted me about doing a virtual tour with us to promote her book, I was very excited. As soon as I saw her press kit – I emailed several friends with children to tell them about this book.

To get an idea of the topics that are covered in The Power of Your Child’s Imagination – check out the table of contents.

Part One – The Tools

Chapter 1 – The Way Out Is Through the Inside

Chapter 2 – How to Get from here to There

Chapter 3 – The Benefits of Artistic Expression

Chapter 4 – Grown-Ups Need Tools, Too

Part Two – Putting the Tools to Work

Chapter 5 – Everyone Deserves to be Happy

Chapter 6 – When Life is Making Your Child Sick

Chapter 7 – The Bogeyman and Other Scary Stuff

Chapter 8 – Bedtime

Chapter 9 – Why Does Everyone Keep Leaving

Chapter 10 – When Good Kids Do Bad Things

Chapter 11 – Go For the Gold – Celebrate the Bronze

Chapter 12 – Can’t We All Just Get Along?

In the first part of the book, Charlotte Reznick shares her tools on how to help your child not only survive in a stressful  and difficult world – but it can help them to thrive – without drugs. Learn what tools she recommends – help your child learn to be creative and to use their imagination to the full. I love the technology that we have, but too many children and adults don’t show a lot of creativity. As a child and adult, I loved being creative and have always used my imagination – maybe too much.

Some of the conditions and ailments that these tools can help you with, include: stress induced headaches and stomachaches, bed wetting, inability to sleep, problems as school, problems with siblings, trouble concentrating, frustration ,anger issues, dealing with death or divorce, panic attacks, social anxiety, and much more.

Dr Reznick shares each tool – explains the details of each tool, explains how to prepare your child, provides notes to help you through the process with additional notes and she provides variations of each tool that you can use. She explains how children use each tool and gives troubleshooting tips. The book provides all of these details for each tool.

How many of these things does your children face on a regular basis? What would you give to find a drug free way to help them? The answer is here. After you read Part One and learn about the tools that Dr Reznick uses, move to Part Two and learn how she uses these tools to help the situations listed above.

I love the title of Chapter 5 – Everyone Deserves to be Happy. That is so true and we especially want our children to be happy and to help them move forward in life on the right foot.

In each chapter in Part Two – you see the instructions on how to put the tools to work, but that is just the beginning.  I love to see unique features in non-fiction and Dr Reznick provides these. She provides: quick tips to help you and your child, backtrack alerts and detailed “how to” instructions. While I appreciate all these elements, the backtrack alerts are wonderful – Dr Reznick gives you things to look for to see if you child is losing ground. This is wonderful and I think very beneficial because we all know how hard it can be to see changes in a person when we are around them all the time, but these are additional red flags to watch for and to understand there is a problem.

I think any parent, advisor, counselor, aunt, uncle etc who loves and helps children needs a copy of this book – and they need to read and use it. In closing, I have to share this quote from an 11 year old boy – to me, this proves this young man understands. He said, “The only way to love yourself is to believe and believe in yourself”.

Chapter 13 – Initial Public Openings

Chapter 14 – Direct Public Offerings

Chapter 15 – Strategic Alliances

Chapter 16 – Legal Considerations

Chapter 17 – The Pitch

Chapter 18 – Glossary

Chapter 19 – Resources

There are many unusual and creative financing options that are discussed in this book in detail. So – if you are looking for a very thorough book that walks you through the traditional and the more creative financing process for your business – this is the book for you. The resources section is also packed with all kinds of resources to get much more information to help you in search to get financing for your business. Like Chapter 2 says — the money is out there, you just need the details on how to get it.

Heart of Marketing by Judith Sherven and Jim Sniechowski

Posted by litekepr on February 14, 2010

Customer service and really good customer service seems to be a thing of the past in many businesses. When I was growing up – my grandfather reinforced the importance of stellar customer service to me and that lesson has served me very well of the last two decades.  This book explains how to put “heart” back into our businesses and our marketing.

The full title of this book is Heart of Marketing: Love Your Customers and They Will Love You Back.

This book is made up of the answers to 45 questions about the “soft sell marketing” concept. There were MANY questions submitted, but Judith and Jim narrowed it down to 45 questions and share the answers with all of us in Heart of Marketing.

Some of the topics include:

  • What is Marketing?
  • What is the primary benefit of soft sell marketing?
  • How does soft sell marketing differ from hard sell?
  • People say to succeed you have to get your ego out of the way. What does that mean?
  • When creating soft sell marketing messages, which words reassure and establish a relationship quickly?
  • Do you use “urgency” or “scarcity” in soft sell marketing?
  • How do I sell without making a nuisance of myself?
  • How can you close a sale without pushing too far?
  • How do I train my brain to realize its ok to ask for the sale because what I am offering is of value of them and not just money for me?
  • What are the pitfalls of soft sell marketing?
  • How do I measure the success of soft sell marketing?

These are just a few of the questions that are included in Heart of Marketing.

Are you the type of business person or sales person who has a hard time with the traditional hard sell approach? You NEED to read this book. I learned long ago that you can make the sale and succeed with using hard sell techniques. This book takes that premise and walks you through the soft sell process. Even if you like the “hard sell” – you can learn valuable tips from this book and you may find ideas that you can incorporate into your current selling techniques. It could help you take your current success to a much higher level.

Are you an entrepreneur and business owner who wants their sales people to use the soft sell sales approach? You need to recommend this book to your sales team or better yet – buy copies for them and help them learn how to love your customers – your business will reap the benefits.  I worked with Judith and Jim on the campaign that helped them reach Amazon Best Seller status – now you can find out what all the excitement was about – and learn the soft sale tips that made this book a best seller.

The New Rules for Mortgages by Dale Robyn Siegel

Posted by litekepr on November 15, 2009

Wbook_coverhen I think of some of the biggest decisions we can make in our lives – I think of things like getting married, having children, starting a business, and buying a home – to name a few. These are major things we do in our lives and these things affect our lives for many years to come — so they are the kind of things that we should think about very carefully and thoroughly before we do them.

So why is it that so many people have no idea about the mortgage on their home? I could ask many questions about the other major decisions, but that would be different books.

How many people do you know that have a 30 years (or longer) mortgage on their home, but they don’t understand the terms or anything else about the loan? I admit that I’m incredibly careful about spending money and especially when it comes to a purchase of that magnitude — so I can tell you that I discussed the details with my loan officer – I asked so many questions, that I didn’t know if we would still be friends. But I understood what I was signing and I felt very good about the loan. Can you say the same about your mortgage?

If you have a mortgage and you don’t understand it, if you are looking for a mortgage or if you just want to understand the current mortgage market – The New Rules for Mortgages is for you. Dale Robyn Siegel is an insider – she is in the mortgage business and she has been for years. She understand what is needed to secure a loan, she knows the things you need to know long before you walk in to fill out that application and she know the dos and don’ts of getting the best mortgage for YOU. And, she knows what will keep you from getting the home of your dreams. These are all reasons why you need to read The New Rules for Mortgages.

I am not a financial guru and I admit that many of the terms my mortgage officer used were foreign to me – but Siegel walks you through the entire process. These are some of the chapters in this book — how many of these topics are things that you don’t understand?

The All-Important Credit Score

Income Yeah, You Need That!

Money Matters

A Good Look at the Property

What Mortgage Is Best for You?

Where to Get the Best Mortgage

The Loan Process

Interest Rates, Closing Costs, and the Closing

Types of Property

Protecting Your Homeownership: Divorce, Dispute and Death

You Are a Homeowner

Whether you are a first time home buyer, self employed, under employer, an investor or most any other home buyer – this book has the details you need to make educated decisions when it comes to buying a home. Let an industry insider give you the information you need to get the best possible mortgage for you.

The Fearless Factor by Jacqueline Wales

Posted by litekepr on October 27, 2009

FearlessBookEBookCover3D

We’ve all heard the saying that life is a jungle and that idea is a big part of The Fearless Factor by Jacqueline Wales.  She shares her story of what happened in her life, the trials and addictions that she went through and how she ultimately faced her fears and created the life that she wanted. This information is good for anyone facing  fears, but for women or men who want to own their own business – the content of this book can be invaluable in their journey to success personally and in business.

The Fear less Factor: Overcome the Fears, Doubts and Anxiety That Stop You From Being Your Best Self Now by Jacqueline Wales is for anyone who is facing any fear and obstacles in their life. Do you know anyone who needs to deal with fear or obstacles in their life? Maybe you need to deal with some fears. There are so many things that people need to handle in their lives and those are the people who need to read The Fearless Factor.

The Section Headers in the Fearless Factor set the stage for the content –

Part 1 – Enter the Jungle

Part 2 – Choose the Right Path

Part 3 – Arrive at the Clearing

Part 4 – Master the Jungle

In Part 1, Jacqueline Wales discussed identifying what fear is, why do we ignore fear, how much pain are you in, what are you willing to give up, what is your commitment to change, where do you want to go, what do you want to achieve, do you think change is easy, determine what you are grateful for, keep smiling, age and attitude and much more.  Part 1 sets the stage and lets you evaluate what you need to deal with and to begin evaluating yourself. Another element is – are you ready to make a change? That may sound funny, but not everyone is ready to make the commitment to make a real change.

When you’re ready to move to Part 2, you need to learn how to choose the right path. Jacqueline Wales hits on many points that are important and that will likely be hard to face. But, to move forward through the jungle of life – you must face these concerns and be honest with yourself. She starts by asking what stories you tell yourself. Then you evaluate when opinions and expectations influence your life. Are you avoiding issues? She tells you to stop second guessing yourself and to be honest about whether you are all right. Chapter 8 starts by asking are you ready to change your life. You must develop compassion and forgive yourself. She wants you to answer the lies you tell yourself and what motives you to do this. Part 2 is not light reading, but a very integral part of your journey.

Appropriately Part 3 is titles Arrive at the Clearing. After considering the elements of Part 2 – you will indeed reach a clearing mentally and emotionally. This is the time to start identifying your values, skills and experience. These will help you define who you are. Mistakes and failure are the next topics – and she wants you to understand the positive elements of “failure”. Its time to get rid of the negativity and to learn to love yourself. An entire chapter is dedicated to risks – where to take risks and where to avoid risks.

This has been a powerful journey and Jacqueline Wales says it is time to move onto a bigger game – so you need to understand what is holding you back. Evaluate where you give up the control in your life and get rid of the distractions. Chapter 18 helps you to define, refine and accept your dreams. Isn’t it amazing how a person can go from not understanding fear and then being able to realize their dreams? This is a huge step for many people and the trek that Jacqueline Wales lays out  in her book will enable you or someone you love to make this sort of change in your life.

I can tell you from personal experience that facing you r fears, learning to love yourself, understand your skills and values, understand its all right to fail sometimes and many of the other things that Wales talks about in The Fearless Factor – are wonderful steps to making great changes in your life. These are some of the things I did several years ago that helped me to lead a much happier, more fulfilling and successful life. I didn’t say it is easy, but I wish I’d had this guide to help me through my personal struggles. It is available for you – and the principles in this book can make a major difference in your life – to make it better.

Emotional Freedom by Dr Judith Orloff

Posted by litekepr on August 23, 2009

There are many people who are facing a wide variety of stresses, discouragements, disappointments and other events and situations that take an emotional toll on their lives. Sadly, many people feel there isn’t much they can do to help themselves, their loved ones or their business associates who are having a tough time. Or, they feel that medication is the only answer. I’m the sort of person who avoids medication as much as possible, so I’m always on the lookout for other alternatives. I’m also a person who is very concerned about friends and associates who are emotionally fragile or who find themselves in difficult and trying situations. We all know people who have more than the usual problems in their lives. So – what can we do to help them?

When we know people who are stressed, discouraged, depressed, dealing with a very heavy load of problems, how can we help them? This is something I think about as I see friends and family members facing a wide array of problems and especially in these tough economic times. We also see people who reach out to help others and many that can take a toll on their own mental, emotional and physical well being.

For years I looked for a way to be more optimistic in my personal life – but also in business.  There were many “outside” sources that pulled me down and I just had no idea what to do to feel better about myself, my situation and much more. While I still had to work 40-60 hours a week, these personal concerns made my work schedule even more tedious. I know this is something other people deal with every day and especially entrepreneurs who have even more stress in their businesses. So, how can we balance these lives and get our emotional balance and emotional freedom – to move ourselves, our families and our businesses to a higher level?

My first suggestion is that you need to read Dr Judith Orloff’s latest book, Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself From Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life. I love that title and especially “liberate yourself from negative emotions”. If we can deal with the negatives in our lives – so many things are within our grasp. I’m not just saying that – I experienced it a few years ago and it is amazing what has happened in a very positive way since that time. I wish I’d had this book – it would’ve made my transformation easier and it is a transformation.

This is the table of contents for Emotional Freedom by Dr Judith Orloff

Introduction. Emotional Freedom: The Secret to Serenity

Part One
1. The Path to Emotional Freedom: Beginning to Learn to Love
2. Four Practical Secrets to Empowering Your Emotional Life
3. Dreams and Sleep: Accessing Revolutionary States of Consciousness
4. From Intellectuals to Empaths: What Is Your Emotional Type?
5. Combating Emotional Vampires: How to Understand and Protect Your Sensitivity

Part Two
6. The First Transformation: Facing Fear, Building Courage
7. The Second Transformation: Facing Frustration and Disappointment, Building Patience
8. The Third Transformation: Facing Loneliness, Building Connection
9. The Fourth Transformation: Facing Anxiety and Worry, Building Inner Calm
10. The Fifth Transformation: Facing Depression, Building Hope
11. The Sixth Transformation: Facing Jealousy and Envy, Building Self-Esteem
12. The Seventh Transformation: Facing Anger, Building Compassion
Afterword. Living in Service to the Heart: The Blessing of Emotional Freedom

The Secret to Serenity – what a great way to start this book. Who couldn’t use more serenity in their lives.  I’ve thought about what was necessary to find emotional freedom and I know the steps I took and Dr Orloff touches on all of them and some that I didn’t use — yet. I love the first sentence in chapter one – “Your life is about to get better”. Who doesn’t want to hear that about their own life?

Dr Orloff takes you through her experience with emotional freedom and shows what she had to do. This isn’t like taking a pill, which is only a temporary fix or a band aid. This system that she lays out – step by step – is a very attainable way to change your life and to make it more serene, more peaceful, more fulfilling and much more.

Learn your emotional type – every one has an emotional type and once you understand yourself, you can learn about significant others in your life and how to better deal with them. Some years ago I was a hospital department supervisor and every employee took a personality assessment. Then the administrators brought all supervisors in for a meeting to reveal the results. It sounded like a waste or time, but this assessment showed each of us our emotional type and then explained the emotional type for all of the employees who reported to us.

You may wonder what good that would do. Its simple, by understanding our emotional type and our leadership type – we could better understand how we managed our departments and employees. That was powerful – but add a profile of the emotional makeup of each employee. This information showed what they needed from us and how we could adjust our style to get more from the employees. Imagine the change in your business and your life when you learn the best way to deal with family, friends, employees – and anyone else. At that meeting, we all thought about how powerful this test would be for our personal lives and now we have that ability through Dr Orloff’s book – and much more.

There are so many great aspects to this book that I could go on and on, but I’ll two other things that I’ve recommended to many friends and family. Chapter 5 is invaluable to anyone who deals with an “emotional vampire”. You may call it something else, but it’s the people who seem to suck the energy out of you and the room. We can’t always eliminate those people from our lives, so Dr Orloff gives step by step instructions and quizzes to help us deal with the people who drain our emotions and energy.

Part Two gives us the “Tools For Liberation”. In this section, Dr Orloff gives us all the tools to transform our lives. She helps us face: fear, frustration, loneliness, anxiety, depression, jealousy, and anger. Who couldn’t benefit from learning to face even one of these problems?

I can’t recommend this book highly enough for any facing problems. Even if you feel you’re on solid emotional ground, there are things in this book that will help you. And, like me, I bet you will find many family, friends and business acquaintances that you will recommend the book to. I bought copies as gifts for a number of close friends- that’s how much I value them and the content of this book.

Baby Be Mine by Diane Fanning

Posted by litekepr on January 12, 2008

I’ve been a fan of true crime books for many years and have several favorites that I read. However, in March of 2006, I met Diane Fanning when I moderated a panel she was on at the Festival of the Book. To prepare for our panel discussion, I read two of her books and I was hooked. She takes the true crime book to a new level that I appreciate.

She doesn’t just give the well publicized facts of the case, but she digs deeper. In Baby Be Mine, she gave a lot of information which some may consider to be unnecessary and I was a little confused at first. However, as I continued to read, I realized she was giving us information about the collateral damage that was caused by this act of violence. The repercussions were felt by many people in many areas and not just the immediate family of the victim.

I found the information she wove into the book about similar crimes to be very enlightening and it gave more depth to the Bobbie Jo Stinnett murder. For this case, murder does not seem like a sufficient description of the crime perpetrated on her. I appreciated the additional information that was included in the book and feel it made the content even more compelling. I have two other books of Diane’s in my to be read pile and hope to read them soon.

Cape Cod by William Martin

Posted by litekepr on January 12, 2008

This is a wonderful version of the settling of Cape Cod. The story begins before the boats arrive in the New World and follows a family’s struggle through the present time. The history is interwoven with his fictional town. I read this after I visited Cape Cod for the first time and loaned my copy to a friend from the area. It didn’t find its way home and I bought another copy. Highly recommended. The flashback chapters which are worked into the story and the present day chapters may be confusing, but stick with it, this is a great book. My novels are set just north of Cape Cod on the Cape Ann coast and I’d love to read his take on Cape Ann.

Past Imperfect by Nora Peterson

Posted by litekepr on January 11, 2008

Nora Peterson introduces us to Casey McCloud. She is a thirty something woman who is on a mission. A young woman hired a private investigation office to find out some mysteries from her past. That sounds simple enough, but the young woman dies under questionable circumstances a couple of days later. Casey realizes that something is not as it seems and decides to solve the mystery, even though the client is dead. Her quest sends her to Boston a week before Christmas. The Boston atmosphere will make you dig out your gloves and hat as you make your way through the streets with Casey as she pieces together the clues to solve the mystery. Nora Peterson will also take you from the world of high society and into the world of the homeless as a harsh winter storm heads toward Boston. I love a good mystery and Past Imperfect kept my attention and even distracted me for an entire morning while I kept reading to find out “who done it”.
